Community IPM Working Group: Priorities

Priorities developed by the working group, posted October 16 2003

1. Continue to develop and present implementation models, demonstrations, and programs, and communicate their existence and success.

2. Develop outreach to homeowners, retailers of homeowner pest management products, and 'multipliers' (eg. libraries, teachers).

3. Address priorities identified by the Turf IPM Work Group.

4. Research, develop and outreach methods for low-input landscape and turf maintenance strategies including development and distribution of a pocket field guide for the pest management of landscapes and turf.

5. Develop criteria for measuring success in implementing IPM in community settings.

6. Catalog general use pesticides available to the public.

7. Develop new IPM definitions (as elements, guidelines) that fill existing gaps.

8. Research and outreach on wildlife pest management including landscaping "Do's and don't's".

9. Research to quantify financial costs/benefits of implementing IPM in schools and municipal settings including predicting the impact of changing policies (such as notification laws and pesticide phase-out "sunset" ordinances.

10. Identify and address research and outreach needs for structural pest management in community settings (residences, public buildings, schools).

11. Sponsor a Second Northeast Regional Community IPM Conference in 2007 to bring together researchers, educators, regulators, pest managers and stakeholders to share their insights and expertise on issues of community and urban integrated pest management (IPM).
